Narrative Techniques in Adam Yahya Abdul Rahman Al-Fulani's Novel "The Shepherd"

Abstract

الرواية الفنية من الفنون الأدبية المعاصرة، عرفها العرب عن طريق الاحتكاك بالعالم الغربي، وقد ترجموا بعض النصوص الروائية إلى لغتهم العربية قبل أن وضعوا ما جدت به قرائحهم في هذا الفن بلغتهم وأساليبهم الخاصة. عرف طلبة اللغة العربية النيجيريون الرواية عندما التحقوا بالجامعات، إذ كانت من المقررات الدراسية للحصول على الشهادة الجامعية في اللغة العربية وآدابها، ولما تخرجوا فيها أقبل بعضهم على كتابتها وأثروا بنصوصها المكتبات العربية. ومما صدرت على أيدي الكُتاب النيجيريين من الروايات "راعي الغنم" التي تتطرق هذه المقالة إلى عرض ودراسة لها، وهي إحدى الأعمال الروائية للكاتب الروائي النيجيري المشهور آدم يحيى عبد الرحمن الفلاني، والهدف من دراستها إبراز ما تكنه هذه الرواية من الأساليب السردية المطردة ومدى نجاح كاتبها من استغلالها. والمنهج المتبع في الدراسة هو المنهج الوصفي التحليلي؛ حيث عرض محتويات الرواية وتوضيح الفنون الروائية الواردة فيها بالتفصيل، والنتيجة تبدي أن هذه الرواية من أروع الأعمال الروائية التي ألّفها أدباء اللغة العربية في نيجيريا؛ لاشتمالها على الأساليب الفنية المطردة للنص الروائي المثالي وتطبيقها كما ينبغي.

The novel is one of the contemporary literary arts. Arabs became acquainted with it through their interaction with the Western world, and they translated some fictional texts into Arabic before producing works of their own in this genre, using their own language and distinctive styles. Nigerian students of Arabic became familiar with the novel when they enrolled in Universities, as it was part of the curriculum required for obtaining university degrees in Arabic language and literature. After graduating, some of them engaged in writing novels and enriched Arabic-language libraries with their works. Among the novels produced by Nigerian writers is Ra’il-Ganam (The Shepherd), which this article examines and analyzes. It is one of the fictional works of the renowned Nigerian novelist Adam Yahya Abd al-Rahman al-Fulani. The aim of this study is to highlight the various narrative techniques employed in the novel and assess the author’s feat in making effective use of them. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, presenting the contents of the novel and explaining in detail the narrative techniques and literary devices found within it. The findings indicate that the novel ­-Ra’il-Ganam- is one of the finest fictional works produced by Arabic-language writers in Nigeria, owing to its incorporation and appropriate application of the established artistic techniques characteristic of an exemplary novel.
